Early in my career, I quickly realized what's needed in an effective opening by witnessing what doesn't work. I watched others struggle, tried to offer suggestions but it fell on big egos and deaf ears. Even as a younger chef... had to assist some openings that missed the mark and I was stuck doing things that did nothing to advance the opening or stabilize the op post opening.
After leading, organizing and conducting my own openings... I realized although each venue is different and presents its own challenges - it requires a certain focus of mind to get it right - and this comes through watching what doesn't work and simply doing it better.
